As self-driving cars move closer and closer to reality, one particular market stands to benefit — autonomous taxis (aka robotaxis). Tasha Keeny from Ark Invest recently evaluated the players who’d likely benefit from this massive market opportunity. Keeney writes, “Autonomous vehicles will transform personal mobility … reap[ing] the benefits of a new market which promises to ramp from essentially $0 now to $10 trillion in global gross annual revenues by 2030.”
Waymo has begun partnering with Valley Metro in Phoenix to connect people with the public transportation system using its fleet of autonomous cars from Chrysler.
Waymo has forged new alliances with 5 companies in the Phoenix area that will make its self-driving Pacifica minivans available to customers. Walmart, AutoNation, and Avis are some of the new partners with Waymo.
In another move that hints at how close self-driving cars may be to reality, Google/Alphabet-owned Waymo has announced a deal with AutoNation, the largest auto dealer in the US, to service its fleet of vehicles. The multiyear arrangement means that AutoNation will now be responsible for the maintenance and repair of the increasing number of Waymo’s Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans that are on the roads.
