A recent article by The Spring points out that Tesla’s Autopilot looks extremely safe, and keeps getting safer. The data show that a Tesla driver with Autopilot engaged was 30% to 41% less likely to crass in 2019 (3rd quarter) compared to 2018 (3rd quarter).
Autopilot sees something different in the moving shadows, something that the naked eye of a human barely catches in the early hours of the morning or late at night. It is dark and rainy, conditions that can create low visibility. What may actually be a person jaywalking could be seen as a moving shadow by the naked eye of a sluggish driver.
This attempted Tesla car jacking could have turned out deadly, but instead, thankfully, not only was the would-be thief caught, but people can laugh at his awkward and failed attempt to steal the car.
Tesla is looking for new ways to improve the crash structure with more robust “crash can” designs, according to a patent granted to the company this week. A few days ago, we wrote about Tesla earning the Top safety score (TOP SAFETY PICK+) from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). I had publicly asked them last month why they hadn’t yet tested the car and was happy to get a reply that they were working on it. I’m not surprised how things turned out.
The Tesla Model 3 won the IIHS’s TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, which means that the car achieved the top score in all 8 test categories. You cannot get a better score. While this is a tremendous achievement, it’s also not surprising. The Model 3 already achieved the best safety score ever from the NHTSA, and we know that it is the safety leader due to abundant crumple zones, market-leading active safety features, extremely strong doors and a similarly strong roof, a low center of gravity that keeps the car stable, and tremendous traction control.
Drowsy driving is more common than you think.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention point out that “no one knows the exact moment when sleep comes over their body. Falling asleep at the wheel is clearly dangerous, but being sleepy affects your ability to drive safely even if you don’t fall asleep”.
Tesla has been expanding at an insane pace in a push to create new vehicle delivery routes to new countries at the same time as it continues adding production capacity for the upcoming Tesla Model Y. Construction at Gigafactory 3 in China is wrapping up on phase 1 and Tesla is getting close to making a decision on the location of Gigafactory 4 in Europe.
