Recently, when a Tesla Model 3 owner got a chance to park his car beside a Jaguar I-PACE, something struck his mind — both vehicles were at least the same length and, when checking the numbers, noticed the width of the Model 3 is only 1.8″ (46 mm) less than the I-PACE.
There is no other reason for me to report on the Dutch sales than that it is my home market, and I have the numbers.
The entrance of the Model S in Germany was considered a failure about 5 years ago. Autos of this class were expected to be “Autobahn capable,” which in Germany translates to driving for 3 hours at 130 mph. Of course, nobody ever does it, beside car magazine journalists testing their (and the cars’) endurance while driving in the middle of the night. In day time there is far too much traffic to do stupid things like that.
The German plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market continued on the right track in April, having scored 7,771 registrations. Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) grew at a faster pace, +50% year over year (YoY), than plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), +14% YoY, contributing to an all-electric share in 2019 of 67%, far above the 2018 result of 53%.
The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive sales month in April, with 2,520 plug-in vehicle registrations, up 150% year over year (YoY). That translated as a PEV share of 8% across the overall auto market, pulling the year-to-date (YTD) count to 12,944 units, and keeping the 2019 PEV share at 9% — above last year’s final result.
Today was another exciting day for the electric drive aficionados. Volkswagen presented its ID. sub-brand to the world, with the first model, the ID.3, ready for reservation. The times that VW was short for VaporWare are over.
Tesla has improved the efficiency of its Model S and X vehicles, via new motors, wheel bearings, tires and more, giving the Model S Long Range variant 370 miles of range (EPA rating).
The Swiss plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market smashed its previous sales record (1,341 registrations) last month by registering 2,162 vehicles. That meant that the PEV share jumped to 7.5% (6.4% from fully electric vehicles and 1.1% from plug-in hybrids), pulling the 2019 PEV share to 5.3% and thus almost doubling last year’s result.
Last month, fully electric vehicles saw their registrations double year over year (YoY), pushing the overall market up +28% despite sales of every other powertrain type dropping at least 20%, which led to record fully electric vehicle (58%) and overall plug-in vehicle (69%) shares. As you already know, Tesla Model 3 deliveries went through the roof in March, with the model achieving 5,315 registrations, a new all-time record for any nameplate in Norway, whatever the fuel source.
Looking at pure electric vehicle sales in the United States, there’s one clear takeaway — the Tesla Model 3 dominates.
