Toyota recently announced it is advancing its existing EV roadmap by 5 years. Instead of selling 1 million fully electric vehicles (BEVs), cumulatively, by 2030, the target year is now 2025. Tesla, meanwhile, will reach a 1 million BEVs sometime in early to mid 2020, at least 5 years ahead of Toyota. Even Volkswagen expects to reach that goal in late 2021. Toyota is essentially admitting defeat at this point.
Police in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen have selected the Hyundai Kona EV to be their first all-electric police car.
There is no other reason for me to report on the Dutch sales than that it is my home market, and I have the numbers.
I reported recently on the Tesla Model 3 being the #3 best selling car in California in the first quarter of this year (in terms of units sold), and Max Holland showed that it was also the #1 best selling car in California in terms of revenue for that time period. No other electric cars were in the top 10 overall, but a few did quite well in their respective segments.
News reports out of Norway highlight a large cutback in sales at Oslo’s largest Mercedes dealer, Bertel O Steen. Norwegian car sales have increased by 4 percent over last year, but there has been a large shift away from gas and diesel vehicles, and toward electric vehicles.

The German plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market continued on the right track in April, having scored 7,771 registrations. Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) grew at a faster pace, +50% year over year (YoY), than plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), +14% YoY, contributing to an all-electric share in 2019 of 67%, far above the 2018 result of 53%.
The European passenger plug-in vehicle market had a record 60,000 registrations in March, growing 38% compared to the same period last year, a good performance considering the stagnating mainstream market (−4% year over year, or YoY).
The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive sales month in April, with 2,520 plug-in vehicle registrations, up 150% year over year (YoY). That translated as a PEV share of 8% across the overall auto market, pulling the year-to-date (YTD) count to 12,944 units, and keeping the 2019 PEV share at 9% — above last year’s final result.
The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had 4,542 registrations in April, up 43% YoY, with a big portion of this growth coming from pure electric vehicles (BEVs). In total, BEVs scored 3,222 deliveries last month (+70%), with those all-electric cars representing 71% of all plug-in vehicle sales. This growth is even more significant when we realize that the overall vehicle market remained stagnant (+0.4%).
