It seemed to me that Audi (under the VAG Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft) with the extravagant technical achievement of the A2 had made a profound statement of peak efficiency of the internal combustion engine that it seemed impossible to surpass, and the next big surprise from this respected automobile giant would be an electric long-range model. I was certain I would be trading in my diesel A2 with an electric A2 soon enough.
After years of using the e-tron name on all kinds of concept vehicles and plug-in hybrid hatchbacks, Audi finally took the wraps off of the SUV that will bear this name in the marketplace in the second quarter of 2019. The all-electric e-tron is a 5-passenger SUV with a range that should compete with the long-distance EV champs out there today.

BMW, Audi, and Mercedes should be prepped for this, since they’ve already been walloped in the large luxury sedan class. Nonetheless, what’s coming is like nothing they could truly prep for. These automakers have been trading wins with each other in various monthly and annual races, but Usain Bolt just came to town and is soon joining the track days.
Even that title looks like a looming disaster for Audi. It’s like when Lionel Messi takes on several opponents at once as if that would make it fair … but then humiliates them all.
Also, apologies to Audi for starting with you. Perhaps it was due to the alphabetical primacy. Perhaps it was that Audi is such a popular brand in the segment the Tesla Model 3 is clearly targeting. Or perhaps it was simply because I like the design of Audis, I bought an Audi as my first car as a teenager (at a time when buying an Audi was not normal or advised), and I used to be in love with the Audi A4.
