I’ve followed Tesla closely for about 7 years. Confident predictions about Tesla’s imminent death have been commonplace for much longer than that. These have come from armchair auto experts, retired auto executives, non-retired auto execs, high-rolling short sellers, low-rolling short sellers, clueless or pretending to be clueless TV hosts and journalists, paid trolls, and probably others I’m forgetting to honor here.
I recently had some fun digging up old Tesla news, putting it in the context of the company up to today can make it fascinating. I’ve also elaborated on 11 years of hyped up FUD about Tesla and claims of its eminent demise for the past decade, as well as 8 “impossible” goals the company has achieved. I forgot, though, that a reader sent along a list of his own back in October. It’s a great list as well, so I’m writing about it here for another round of “Tesla Flashbacks.”
The numbers are in and 2018 turned out to be quite a solid year for electric vehicle sales in the US.
I was searching for some old information on the Model X on Friday and I stumbled across interesting old news that made me reflect a bit on Tesla’s development. Then I stumbled across more. And then more. So I ended up deciding to put together this piece on some Tesla news flashbacks.

While reading an article on the ING website regarding a study on electric vehicle sales in the Dutch market by value, instead of by units, something struck me: the Tesla Model S was the 5th highest revenue generating model (€85 million) in the Netherlands in the first quarter, with an average price of €104,800!
When consumers walk into a US car dealership and have a choice of buying either an electric or internal combustion engine (ICE) powered version of the same model, what percentage opt for the BEV or PHEV version? The short answer is 9.8% on average.
The Netherlands had 963 registrations in April, up 170% compared to the same period last year. That pulls the year-to-date (YTD) count to 5,472 units (+129%), while placing the 2018 share at 3.2%. Fully electric cars (BEV) represent a whopping 87% of all plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) sales.
