Clean Tech Week in Review: 10 Headline News Stories

Google made a big news splash this week, announcing it was partnering with KKR to invest in four California solar power projects, but that was only one of many newsworthy stories that broke. Among them are plans to develop an East Coast grid to carry power from offshore wind farms, BP Solar quitting the business after 40 years, a second German solar power industry player filing for insolvency and a second solar investment by Warren Buffet and Berkshire Hathaway’s Mid-American Energy.

The Real Reason the Obama Administration Backed Solyndra

The Obama administration had set a goal, for the public good, of cutting solar costs to $1 a watt installed by 2016.

The reason that the Obama Department of Energy invested a half million in backing some of the private VC loans (which totaled $1 billion) to Solyndra was that the company had a way to bring down the cost of solar.

Slowing activity in major economies and the possibility of another breakdown in the global financial system hampered clean tech investment growth in 3Q, yet overall investment levels continued to exhibit strong growth, according to preliminary results of a Cleantech Group research report.
