The Tesla Model X is 23% more efficient than the Jaguar I-PACE according to German YouTube channel NextMove. That makes the Model X the preferred electric car choice for long distance travel.
Editor’s note: Ironically, the home of the first North American Jaguar I-PACE is just a few minutes away from me. CleanTechnica was invited to attend the handover, but it was the same day that I was flying to Brussels to present at AEC2018. One of our Tesla Shuttlers in the region, who picked me up from Tampa International Airport upon my return and who I wrote a bit about here, was happy to cover the news, though, and wrote his inaugural CleanTechnica article to mark the occasion. He also asked Jaguar a few questions and received some responses that I think readers will find interesting. Jaguar is considering transitioning to an all electric lineup by 2025, partly because the I-PACE has been so well received and partly because sales for the brand are sagging. Electric cars may be the shot of adrenaline the company needs to remain relevant in the future.
Tesla is crushed both Jaguar and Porsche in the 3rd quarter, in terms of worldwide sales/deliveries.
“This was a learning process for us,” Dr. Wolfgang Ziebart, Technical Design Director, Jaguar Land Rover, told CleanTechnica. “The initial idea was these cars are mainly sold to people withe a green background, but then we saw that the majority of customers were different.”
One of the many reasons we love electric vehicles (EV) is, presumably, because we love efficiency. Compared to the woefully pushy, but highly asthmatic, internal combustion engine (ICE), the electric motor “suffers” from the opposite problem — it’s too darn efficient. In fact, it’s so efficient that it needs to tune down. A gasoline engine requires better airflow, less friction, again and again just to make it 40% efficient (and only within a restricted RPM range) whereas an electric motor is easily 85% efficient. Must we go on? Jaguar just showed how efficient the electric drivetrain is.
With the recent rush by the prestigious European marques to try to grab all of the glittering limelight for their forthcoming SUV-style EVs, a similarly sized offering coming in at half the price is quietly proving its merits with superior efficiency and range. The Kia Niro EV’s early real-world tests show it will have range within 5% to 10% of it’s significantly smaller “efficiency-champ” sibling, the Hyundai Kona, and far better efficiency than any of the purportedly well-engineered European marques. Only the Tesla Model 3 has better efficiency than the Koreans, but that’s not an SUV or CUV.

Let’s just start with some numbers. Below are USA sales totals for the month of August from several top luxury car brands. Additionally, I’ve included an estimate for Tesla’s sales in the USA. While we don’t have precise numbers from Tesla, there is now confirmation from CEO Elon Musk that Tesla sold more cars in the USA in August than BMW, which means it sold more cars than all the other brands in the headline.
Jaguar Classic has announced it will begin selling electric versions of the XK-E beginning in 2020? The price? If you have to ask, you can’t afford one.
