In 2018, 24,024 fully electric vehicles were sold in the Netherlands, three times as many as in 2017, according to figures from industry associations RAI and BOVAG and data specialist RDC. Of all new cars registered in 2018, 5.4% of them were plug-in vehicles (does not include conventional hybrids).

There’s a lot of excitement in the electric vehicle world these days. Tesla has come along and shown that you can produce a mass-market electric car that ranks #1 in its class (by far) and even ranks in the top 5 of all car models. The European passenger plug-in market slowed down a bit to enjoy the holiday season, registering some 27,000 registrations in July. That’s an increase of 30% compared to the same period last year. It pulled the year-to-date count to some 212,000 deliveries (+41% YoY), while the 2018 EV market share remained stable at 2.2%, which, incidentally, was the same market share registered in July.
Insurance companies in the UK are now seemingly reluctant to insure electric vehicles. Well, they will insure them, but they will charge drivers a premium to do so. We have no data to support a direct linkage between higher insurance rates on electric vehicles and lower adoption rates, but the logic is hard to deny.
The German plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) passenger car market cooled off somewhat in May, growing just 24% year over year (YoY) to 4,711 registrations. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) slowed down significantly (+6%), while fully electric cars (BEVs) continued growing at a healthy pace (+52%). In 2018, with all-electrics reaching 1% share and plug-in hybrids are dropping their share to 0.9%, the total PEV share of the German car market is 1.9%.
