COVID-19 & The Economy: Dark Clouds & A Ray Of Sunshine
The economy of most countries has been shattered by the coronavirus. We may get back to normal someday, but it will be a new kind of normal.

Coronavirus and homelessness is a toxic mix that puts an entire segment of the population at risk. Have you ever been woken up by a police officer prodding you with their baton and telling you that you have to move?
Tesla’s engineering team released an update on Tesla’s progress making ventilators — something that hospitals desperately need to fight the coronavirus-caused disease COVID-19. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has already helped hospitals by donating CPAPs that doctors can convert into ventilators, as we’ve covered a few times. This is something different.
As a science teacher, I have shared the video above with my family and friends through social media, emails, texts, and phone calls. There has been a lot of controversy over masks because healthcare workers need them and masks are only a tool.
It has been widely speculated that the disease COVID 19 began in a meat market in Wuhan China. These markets are truly a sight to behold. I recently went to such a market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia that went on for over a mile. I have seen numerous similar markets … [continued]
Medtronic tweeted that it is mobilizing with Elon Musk. By collaborating with Tesla and SpaceX, the companies are making a vital component for critical care ventilators. This will mean that more ventilators will be available for COVID-19 patients.

When the boxes arrived, however, hopes were quickly dashed, as 170 of the ventilators were broken and useless. At least, they were until fuel cell engineer Joe Tavi got a hold of them.
The CDC now recommends Americans wear cloth face masks or some other face covering out in public. A video shared by Lex Fridman demonstrates just how vital it is to wear something over our faces — not to protect the wearer but those the wearer interacts with. If everyone had a mask, we would all be safer.
I want to take a moment to highlight those who are out there trying to spread hope, provide aid, and do all they can to address the shortages of ventilators and other medical supplies the US is experiencing. Elon Musk is just one of many in big tech who are helping. (His case is abnormal in one way — he has gotten a lot of criticism for helping.)
The Mount Sinai Hospital of New York, NY, received ventilators from Tesla, as we all know, but worth noting is the hospital’s President and Chief Operating Officer took to both LinkedIn and Twitter to express his gratitude for receiving the ventilators bought by Tesla and given freely to the hospital.
