The California Solar Initiative installed a record 391MW of new solar on utility customer rooftops in 2012. The program has now installed 1,629MW of rooftop solar, enough to power 150,000 homes, and is years ahead of program target goals.
With the cost of solar continuing to fall rapidly (50% in the past five years) and electricity prices rising steadily, if slowly, the approach of solar grid parity is near. The following chart illustrates the trajectory of solar cost and electricity price, hinting at the coming intersection.1 The chart compares … [continued]
Following my article on a GBI Research report about the Global Energy Storage Market to 2020 (April 2013), below is a teaser on another GBI Research report — a “Solar Photovoltaics Power Market to 2020” report (published in October 2012) that it recently just shared with me. (Note: CleanTechnica has a partnership with … [continued]
Solar cells are unusual in that they were cost-competitive from the get-go. From the Apollo space program to highway signs to lighting for buoys, solar could replace highly expensive power from batteries or other sources and eliminate the need for the construction of electric distribution lines.1 When the Institute for … [continued]

A new analysis of government data compiled by Green Energy Markets finds Australia on track to not only hit 22% renewables by 2020, but reach an unprecedented 51% of all electricity by 2050.
This article was originally published on RenewEconomy. Here’s an interesting graph used by Suntech’s Stuart Wenham (sourced from Applied Materials) during a presentation at the Solar 2013 conference in Melbourne on Thursday. It highlights the extent of “grid parity” for solar PV across the world – it is now in … [continued]
This article first appeared on Greentech Media. by Shayle Kann Net metering isn’t the only battleground in the distributed PV industry. GTM Research assesses the ability of rate design to make or break project economics. The battle over net metering has been brewing for years, but it is beginning to bubble over now.
