Plug-In Vehicles = 59% of Vehicle Sales in Norway in October

December 5th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

When it comes to electric vehicle adoption, Norway is king of the hill. Nearly 2 out of every 3 passenger vehicles sold in Norway come with a plug. In October, the plug-in vehicle share was 59%, a bit higher than the 56% plug-in vehicle hold for January–October

Plug-In Vehicles = 14% of Vehicle Sales in Sweden in November

December 5th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

Norway gets most of the glory for electric vehicle sales leadership, or China does for the sheer volume of sales there (approximately half of the global market), but there are a few other country markets with notable electric vehicle market share (if not volume) that are fun to track and interesting to compare to Norway. One of those markets is Sweden, which very quietly sits near the top of EV market share rankings

Plug-In Hybrids Pull Up Europe’s Plug-In Market — October EV Sales Report

November 29th, 2019 | by Jose Pontes

The European passenger plug-in vehicle (PEV) market recorded some 48,000 registrations in October (+46%), and this time it was the plug-in hybrids (+75% growth year over year, or YoY) that pulled the PEV market up. Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) remained at cruising speed (+26%), leading to a nearly even (51% BEVs / 49% PHEVs, vs. 65% / 35% YTD) breakdown between both technologies in October

Tesla Pickup — Cybertruck or Cybercar?

November 28th, 2019 | by Maarten Vinkhuyzen

The recent excellent article by my colleague Jennifer Sensiba about the advantages of a body-on-frame architecture for trucks created a heated discussion. The versatility of a body-, or better, structure-on-frame architecture for the hundreds of different special purpose applications of professional vehicles is beyond dispute. The cost advantage of building one-off structures on such a platform are huge

Ford Mustang Mach-E Is A Tesla Ally, Ford Escape & Edge Killer (Maybe)

November 21st, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

There's a lot of temptation to compare the Ford Mustang Mach-E to the Tesla Model Y. Indeed, they're basically in the same class, are in the same price range, have similar specs, and are both electric. Furthermore, Ford very clearly picked up a number of features and design cues from Tesla — even being the first to do so in some cases

Tesla (Competition) Deathwatch: Gottlieb

November 21st, 2019 | by Frugal Moogal

As I noted in my prior article, when I wrote the first article in this series, I intended to take a quick historical look at one industry and then move on to diving into some of today's automakers to see what risk the EV revolution had to their business. I still do intend to do that, but the comments in the first article pointing out flaws with the Kodak comparison made me want to do some further dives into historical industry disruptions

Open The Plug-In Hybrid Floodgates! Germany EV Sales Report

November 17th, 2019 | by Jose Pontes

Something clicked in the German plug-in vehicle market after the summer holidays. The market had a record month (9,452 registrations) in September, and then October came and set a new record, this time 26% above the previous one! 11,926 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) were registered, more than doubling last year's result. With China's PEV market in post-subsidy blues, this is a welcome boost to global sales. Now if only the US market helped to carry the burden

French EV Market Up 65%, Finally Some Reshuffling!

November 17th, 2019 | by Jose Pontes

The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had 6,433 registrations in October, up 65% year over year (YoY). Interestingly, this time, it was the plug-in hybrids (+118%) pulling the market up the most, with BEVs growing "just" 53%

Nissan, Toyota, Infiniti, & MINI USA Sales Down In October & 2019; Hyundai, Kia, Honda, BMW, Genesis, & Volvo Sales Up

November 11th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

Tracking monthly US auto sales has been a fascinating endeavor this past year. Unfortunately, we don't get data from some brands — Tesla, all Ford Motor Company brands, GM brands, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles brands, Jaguar Land Rover no longer report monthly sales. However, there are 17 brands that do report monthly US sales, so let's have a look at them

Teslas = 77.7% of US Electric Vehicle Sales

November 10th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

The US electric vehicle market ... is not the most interesting. Unfortunately, we have only one mass-market electric vehicle on the market, and there are very few models available across the nation. Actually, aside from Tesla's offerings, I think only two fully electric models available at dealers practically anywhere are the Chevy Bolt and Nissan

Hyundai Kona EV Wins The Netherlands In Slow Month — EV Sales Report

November 7th, 2019 | by Jose Pontes

After a memorable month of September, the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) markets in the Netherlands slowed down significantly, growing just 37% in September, with 2,776 registrations, translating into a PEV share of 8.1% in October. That keeps the 2019 PEV share at a record 10%

7 More Electric Vehicles That Could Hit 10,000 Sales A Month (Perhaps)

November 6th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

In response to a recent article of mine about electric vehicle models that could potentially hit 10,000+ sales a month, several readers suggested other models that I neglected (or simply didn't have much faith in). I thought these suggestions warranted a followup article

Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus Now Supercharges At Up To 170 kW — Charts!

November 5th, 2019 | by Dr. Maximilian Holland

The latest Tesla software update (2019.36.1) has unlocked the full DC charging potential of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (SR+). The Model 3 SR+, with this update, has a 170 kW charging peak, up from the previous 100–105 kW peak. This means that the SR+ battery charge rate (C-rate) is now approximately in line with that of the Model 3 Long Range variants, albeit scaled for the different battery size

Polestar Pricing … Electric Mazda … Tesla Model 3 = #6 In USA — CleanTechnica Top 20

November 4th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

The most popular CleanTechnica stories of October were led by Polestar and Mazda. Seriously. No offense to Polestar or Mazda (okay, some offense to Polestar and Mazda), but I wouldn't have seen that coming a mile away. Does this show a great thirst for more EV news beyond Tesla and more serious EV entries? Possibly. Or it was just some lucky timing and catchy headlines. Or all of the above. In any case, that's where things landed in October. Tesla still dominated the top 20, with 15 out of 20 stories, but it was an interesting phenomenon to see the company almost pushed out of the top
