As I noted in earlier posts about the Danish government’s plan to phase out diesel and gas cars by 2030, a full plan for emission reductions over the next 12 years would be revealed this week. And indeed it was. The plan is called “Together for a greener future.”
It was something of a surprise when Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced this week that Denmark will phase out gasoline and diesel car sales to make room for up to 1 million electric cars on the roads by 2030. The number 1 million was a surprise in itself because only a few days earlier the Danish Council on Climate Change released a report recommending a total of 500,000 electric cars by 2030 to pave the way to the end goal of a fossil fuel free nation by 2050.
Today, at the official annual opening of the Danish parliament, Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen urged that all parties work together to make sure that no more gasoline and diesel cars will be sold in the country by 2030.
We want to change our carbon-intensive behavior, but fail to do so out of fear of becoming marginalized in our social environment. However, we underestimate how much our friends and acquaintances worry about the climate. Efforts to create changes in behavior must therefore have a social focus.
The Danish newspaper Politiken reports that the plans of getting Formula 1 to the streets of Copenhagen has lost support.
