Internet megalith Google has made its largest ever renewable energy purchase by acquiring 842 MW of renewable energy capacity to power its data centers.
The internet giant announced on Thursday that it had made the “largest, and most diverse” purchase of renewable energy projects “by a non-utility company,” putting the company even further along its road towards its goal of powering 100% of its operations with clean energy. This latest purchase brings the company’s renewable energy capacity up to 2 GW, and represents a range of locations and technologies.
The specifics of the projects are a little unclear at the moment, relegated to the following infograph provided by the company through its official blog.
As can be seen, the majority of the new capacity additions are wind energy projects in North America, however, Google noted that its new acquisitions also included more than 150 MW from a solar plant in Chile and a wind farm in Sweden.
Google has made a habit of late of putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to committing to protect the environment. In addition to numerous renewable energy development projects the company is involved with — the latest being Google’s commitment to acquire Vestas Wind Systems’ share of the 310 MW Lake Turkana Wind Power Project in Northern Kenya — Google has also made its own contributions, including Project Sunroof, a new 20% project which provides homeowners with the ability to calculate the possible solar energy potential of their rooftops.
Google was also recently listed as one of 113 companies making up non-profit CDP’s annual Climate A-List, a list of companies identified as being strong actors in the race to mitigate climate change.
