Sweden At 26% Plug-in Vehicle Market Share

Sweden remains an odd plug-in vehicle market in which plug-in hybrids heavily outweigh full electrics. Part of that may be because Volvo Cars only sells plug-in hybrids so far, and Volvo is sort of popular in Sweden.

In fact, Volvo has 5 automobiles one the lost of the top 20 most popular plug-in vehicles in the first half of this year. It commands a 23% share of the plug-in vehicle market.

The good news is that Volvo has some of the most ambitious plans on the planet for selling fully electric vehicles. It plans to have 50% of its sales coming from fully electric models by 2025. In the meantime, before it launches its first full electric, it is selling a lot of plug-in hybrids, especially in Sweden.

The plug-in vehicle market share in Sweden this year is 26%, according to our friends at EV Volumes, and June had the same market split (26%). The country’s top model for the year is the Volvo S/V60 Recharge, but the Volvo XC60 Recharge just sprinted past it to take the #1 spot in the June tally, so keep your eyes peeled on this race.

The Volkswagen Passat GTE is currently in a solid spot in #2, but if the XC60 Recharge keeps up this sprinting, expect the Passat GTE to end the year with the bronze medal instead of the silver. The XC60 Recharge was in the #5 spot in the first half of the year and is only about 800 units behind the Passat GTE.

You don’t get to a full electric vehicle till you get down to the Tesla Model 3 in #6 on the H1 2020 chart or #3 on the June chart.

There is clearly a bias toward plug-in hybrids in Sweden (which we noticed have some issues). However, I have to wonder: when Volvo Cars launches its first fully electric vehicle later this year, the XC40 Recharge P8, will it surge to the leadership position? We’ll see.
