Nissan and its partner Eaton have begun accepting pre-orders in the UK for its new xStorage Home portfolio of energy storage products. The product line — which includes a total of 6 different product configurations — was developed cooperatively by Nissan and the power management firm Eaton.

The product range includes a variety of offerings utilizing second-life batteries taken from old Nissan electric vehicles (at this point, mostly test vehicles), as well as some offerings utilizing brand-new Nissan batteries.

The second-life systems start at £3,000 (€3,500) and rise to £3,300 (€3,900). These prices relate to 3.5 kW systems and 6 kW systems, respectively. The prices don’t include VAT and installation costs.

The systems utilizing new batteries start at £4,200 (€5,000) and rise to £4,700 (€5,580). Notably, these systems include an extended, 10-year warranty.

Solar Power Portal provides more: “xStorage Home can be used either as a standalone system to draw down from the grid during periods of reduced prices, or can be integrated with an existing solar installation due to the inverters included in the system to power homes with renewable energy.”

Continuing: “Nissan and Eaton say the technology is also ‘fit for the future’ by enabling customers to sell energy back to the grid in countries where this is feasible. A number of UK companies are exploring the potential of this service, with UK manufacturer Moixa seeking to aggregate energy from households through its GridShare platform.”

The chairman of Nissan Europe, Paul Willcox, commented on the product line: “Energy pricing and availability have long been concerns for all of us, and with this product, consumers will finally be able to take control of how and when they use energy in their homes. We have already seen overwhelming interest for this product, so we’re excited to be able to offer consumers even greater choice with our wider portfolio of xStorage products. With the launch of xStorage Home, we’re fast approaching a consumer energy revolution.”

In addition to the xStorage Home, the companies are also working to crack the commercial market it seems, with their xStorage Buildings product line. Notably, there’s already a large collaboration in the works with Ajax Football Club (Amsterdam ArenA), which will see the installation of the biggest second-life commercial energy storage system in Europe.

The xStorage Buildings systems are reportedly composed of 280 Nissan Leaf second-life battery packs paired with Eaton bidirectional inverters.
