Aside from our many news stories, we put a lot of time, effort, and tears into creating high-quality, original content. We hope this adds the value we think it adds. We hope the analyses help you and millions of others to better understand the most important cleantech stories of the day. As always, we try to balance the thirst cleantech fanatics have for more depth and context with our efforts to reach more people in the mainstream market who have had little exposure to cleantech topics. It is a constant balancing act.

If you appreciate what we do, we would of course appreciate any financial support you can provide. The content takes time, and time is money. With more money, especially from human subscribers, we can write more articles and add more depth to our work.

Last time I encouraged people to help support our work, there were some suggestions and questions I thought I should respond to in an article. So here they are:

  • “I’d suggest adding one time gifts, as many people dislike monthly recurring charges.” — Good idea. We will implement some gifts for larger one-time contributions.
  • “Please offer us a ad-free paid subscription. I do that on other sites, bonus if it comes with a dark mode.” — We’ve been working on this. Has been hard to develop an option that doesn’t have bugs. Still working on it. Hadn’t considered a “dark mode,” though, which would indeed be nice.
  • “Do you have a Patreon account?” — We had one and dropped it because the custom subscription option doesn’t involve fees that suck away part of the support and also give us more flexibility that we think is useful.
  • Some comments about ads. — We are not generally big fans of ads, either. But they allow us to do the work we do. If you have have a noteworthy issue with ads (what they promote or if they are disruptive to reading the article), please do report them here. But, yes, the more our revenue comes from subscriptions, the less we have to rely on ads.
  • “For some reason it is much harder for people to pay $3 for monthly subscription to a product they like on the Internet, and no problem at all to pay $5 a day for coffee… Even though they enjoy both every day… I guess the reason is the culture of “free” inoculated in our brains by business models of the likes of facebook and Google… But in those cases, we actually are not the customers – we are the product…. so it is a different story. But that corrupted our sense of value…” — I appreciate it. Totally agree. It is something we have been socialized into and we have to genuinely reflect on the topic and consider what we value and benefit from in order to support such work. It took me what I would say is embarrassingly too long to start supporting media outlets I value. But, as they say, better late than never!
