Xpeng is announcing an updated G3 electric crossover, which we will see in San Francisco at SemiCon. So, what’s new with the hot electric crossover?

The new Xpeng G3, 2020 edition, brings more range via a better battery pack, “boasting … extended NEDC driving range of 520 km and energy density of 180 Wh/kg,” according to the company. This roughly translates to 323 miles — just remember the NEDC rating system is much more generous than the US/EPA system. The launch comes on the heels of Xpeng’s P7 coupe, unveiled last March in Shanghai, which we covered locally.

The 2020 Xpeng G3 model will come in two versions. The G3 400 and the G3 520 will go on sale in September 2019 (in China) and will be in the RMB143,800 to 196,800 range. (That’s approximately $20,940 to $28,660 at the moment.)

The G3 520 version extends the range to 520 km NEDC, giving it, according to Xpeng, the longest range in the compact electric SUV class. The G3 400 version will have 401 km NEDC range.

Xpeng chose a new-generation lithium-ion battery from CATL, which means the G3 520’s electric heart will pack 180 Wh/kg of energy density. Its battery pack is IP68 compliant, waterproof, & dustproof. And, of course, the Xpeng G3 comes with a capability to recharge a depleted pack in 30 minutes anywhere from 30% to 80%.

The Xpeng worked hard on the G3 2020 chassis by making it compact with a suspension more resilient coupled with enhanced stability of control and ride comfort, making the G3 a perfect car for China.

Braking performance improved significantly to achieve a braking distance of under 37 meters at 100 km/h (62 MPH). The Xpeng G3 2020 will use Bosch’s new-generation EPB-MI electronic parking brakes, which help with ramp parking, dynamic parking, automatic departure, automatic parking, and anti-sliding.

The new Xpeng G3 2020 Edition upgraded its XPILOT 2.5 OS with TJA (Traffic Congestion Assist), ICA (Intelligent Cruise Assist), and LCC (Lane Centering Control), which works both in city and highway driving. Finally, the new ALC (Automatic Lane Change) means the G3 2020 Edition can now assess traffic and road conditions in real time, automatically change lanes by triggering the turn indicator, and help with more accurate overtaking and lane changing regardless of blind spots. All of these features are coordinated by Xpeng’s AI that detects driver fatigue and distraction warnings by monitoring a driver’s heartbeat and health status.

According to Xpeng Motors Chairman & CEO He Xiaopeng:

“The release of the Xpeng G3 2020 demonstrates that Xpeng Motors is able to expand, upgrade and enhance its product portfolio, addressing customer demands and reinforcing our competitiveness in China’s fast-growing EV intelligent transportation market. As well as a superb vehicle with world-class capabilities, the Xpeng G3 2020 is a confirmation of our capabilities as a frontrunner in China’s EV market.”

The New Xpeng G3 2020 Continues To Impress

Xpeng Motors is doing very well without some of the excessive startup fanfare we’ve seen over the past decades in this industry. The hard work paid off when in April and May 2019 Xpeng ranked #1 among new EV manufacturers in China for monthly deliveries. By June 2019, Xpeng had already produced 10,000 units of the G3, 188 days after its official launch on December 12th, 2018.

It’s always fun and dangerous to gaze into the fictitious crystal ball, but unless Xpeng trips itself up, I can imagine this green mobility provider becoming a brand name internationally.
