Xpeng Motors, a Chinese EV startup, has unveiled the Xpeng P7, an electric sedan/coupe with 600+ km (300+ miles) NEDC Range, a reported 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time of just 4 seconds, dual motors (which enable four-wheel drive), and a semi-autonomous driving system.

Chip in a few dollars a month to help support independent cleantech coverage that helps to accelerate the cleantech revolution!

Xpeng Motors is already known for its Xpeng G3 SUV, which it started to sell in December of 2018 in China. Additionally, the company is known for taking more than a little “inspiration” from the Tesla design language and technology.

Henry Xia, the founder of Xpeng Motors, has previously mentioned that his company is going to take advantage of this approach. The P7 sedan and G3 SUV strongly resemble the current Tesla lineup in external and internal styling, but recently they found themselves in the spotlight as Tesla has sued a former employee for stealing autopilot code.

Xpeng Motors P7 is being targeted for delivery in the second quarter of 2020 and has already received over 3,000 orders according to Xpeng Motors. The factory to produce the P7 is under construction in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, China.

Xpeng Motors P7 is focusing heavily on its ability to deliver a futuristic and market-leading electric driving experience, with dual motors, a long-range battery, quick acceleration, and semi-autonomous driving. The semi-autonomous driving abilities are being put front and centre, with an in-depth description in the press release:

“A second-generation smart car, the P7 is built on the SEPA hardware foundation, which combines the NVIDIA DRIVE Xavier, the world’s most advanced system-on-a-chip (SoC) for autonomous driving, with Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line automotive processor, the Qualcomm SnapdragonTM 820A. This scalable, future-proofed hardware architecture supports Xpeng’s XPILOT 3.0 autonomous driving system, enabling progressive implementation of Level 3 autonomous driving. The XPILOT 3.0 is tailored for China’s road conditions, with features adapted to often congested Chinese cities, cruise control and lane selection for highways, and automatic parking in most-used parking spaces at journey’s end.”

Xpeng Motors Chairman & CEO He Xiaopeng said at the unveiling: “Our visually stunning and technologically groundbreaking models like the P7 demonstrates our determination and commitment to accelerate the development of smart mobility.”

As with any product unveiling, we should probably wait until the product is in customers’ hands to see if this is really a groundbreaking car.
