Lion Electric is adding a new full electric class 8 truck to its lineup, which is available with up to 400 kilometers of range per charge. The new Lion8 brings Lion Electric’s experience from developing electric transit and electric school buses to bear on a larger vehicle class designed for urban deliveries.

The new class 8 truck was built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, with a configurable range of up to 400 kilometers, depending on the needs of the customer. Giving the customer the choice with regards to range allows for the lowest possible capital outlay up front.

“We are very proud that The Lion Electric Co. is ready to commercially launch its first all-electric Class 8 urban truck now,” Marc Bédard, Founder and CEO, The Lion Electric Co. said. “Day after day, the expertise, passion, and vision of our partners, suppliers, and employees continues to impress me. Thanks to them and the industry that fully supports the electrification of transportation, we were able to make possible what everyone said was impossible!”

The all-new Lion8 brings the smooth ride of an electric drive train to customers and eliminated the significant vibrations associated with heavy diesel engines from the world of class 8 trucking. While its 400-kilometer range surely is not well-suited for long-haul trucking routes, it is more than enough for urban delivery routes that enable many customers to electrify their urban delivery vehicles.

Compared to diesel trucks, the Lion8 is estimated to bring with it an 80% reduction in energy cost and a 60% reduction in operational cost. That translates to a lower operational expense budget for fleet managers and serves to sweeten the deal.

“The government is pleased to have contributed $8.6 million to the success of this promising initiative and to have contributed to the electrification of transportation in Quebec,” Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of Economy and Innovation and Minister Responsible for the Lanaudière Region said. “The Lion Electric Co. and its partners TM4, AddÉnergie Technologies, and Solution Centum Adetel Transportation have combined their efforts and expertise to develop a zero-emission heavy-duty truck that demonstrates Quebec’s leadership in innovation and sustainable development. We are proud to prioritize greenhouse reduction projects in Quebec.”

With many cities and countries pinning down firm targets for banning combustion vehicles, investing in zero emission electric trucks today allows fleet managers to test the waters or to dive completely into electric trucks for their routes. Electric vehicles also eliminate the noise associated with heavy diesel vehicles, which translates to a soft benefit for city dwellers, as noise pollution is hard to put a price tag on, but easy to notice when it is gone.

The Lion8 will be available starting in the fall, with the first orders already lined up from the Société des Alcools du Québec (SAQ). The promo video announcing the new truck doesn’t add much to the details, but provides a few different perspectives of the truck.
