Zero Motorcycles is not waiting around for Harley-Davidson to figure out how to make an electric motorcycle. The company has been doing it for the past 13 years. Any comparison between what Zero has done to the motorcycle industry and what Tesla has done to the automotive industry is strictly intentional. While traditional motorcycle companies have dithered and dabbled with the idea of building electric machines, Zero has led the way into the future by offering cutting-edge motorcycles that make no apology for the fact they are propelled by electric motors instead of gasoline engines.

Zero SR/F electric motorcycle

Its latest model — the SR/F — brings together everything the company has learned and introduces its revolutionary new Cypher III operating system that integrates power control, battery management, and internet connectivity to create what Zero calls the first fully “smart” electric motorcycle.

Want specs? How about 140 ft·lb of torque and 110 horsepower just waiting for a twist from your right wrist? On this machine, the horizon will come at you so fast, it will feel like you just made the jump to hyperspace aboard the Millennium Falcon. This is a machine that could definitely do the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs!

The SR/F features a 14.4 kWh battery sending power to the new ZF 75–10 motor. Add the Power Tank option that will be available this fall and the bike will go 200 miles on a single charge thanks to innovative air cooling of the powertrain.

The Cypher III operating system integrates the Bosch Motorcycle Stability Control system that features limited slip acceleration, advance cornering stability, and antilock braking that begins with two enormous front rotors. The SR/F starts at $18,895 with a 3 kW onboard charger. The premium SR/F model featuring a 6 kW “Rapid Charger,” fly screen, heated hand grips, and aluminum bar ends starts at $20,995. Both will be available at dealers this spring.

The Cypher III control system allows riders to monitor their machines in real time with 4 status modes:

1. Bike Status and Alerts: The SR/F alerts riders regarding bike status, including interruptions in charging and tip-over or unexpected motion notifications. In addition, the “Find my Bike” function allows riders to keep tabs on the motorcycle at all times.

2. Charging: The SR/F takes the convenience of recharging to new levels with the ability to remotely set charging parameters, including Targeted Charge Levels, notification of State of Charge, Charge Time Scheduling, and Charge Tracking. These notifications allow riders to control all aspects of charging and to monitor charge status even when away from the motorcycle.

3. Ride Data Sharing: Riders can gather, relive, and share extensive data about their ride through the app. An industry first, the motorcycle records bike location, speed, lean angle, power, torque, SoC, and energy used/regenerated. Riders can replay each ride and also choose to upload additional content to record and share their full experience. Riders also have the option to keep data anonymous.

4. System Upgrades and Updates: New updates and diagnostic capabilities allow the rider to remotely download the latest Cypher III operating system release to ensure optimal performance and provide access to feature improvements.

All Zero electric motorcycles are crafted by hand in California and “combine Silicon Valley technology with traditional motorcycle soul to elevate the motorcycling experience for intelligent, innovative riders around the world.” CleanTechnica’s own Susanna Schick, a dedicated motorcycle racer, will have an opportunity to ride an SR/F shortly. She has owned two Zero motorcycles. We eagerly awaiting her full report!
