Iberdrola Selects MHI Vestas As Preferred Supplier For 476 Megawatt Baltic Eagle Offshore Wind Farm
Offshore wind manufacturing giant MHI Vestas has been selected as preferred supplier by Spanish electric utility Iberdrola to supply its 9.5 megawatt (MW) wind turbines for the 476 MW Baltic Eagle project set to be built in German waters of the Baltic Sea.
Iberdrola and MHI Vestas jointly announced on Monday that the former had selected the latter as the preferred wind turbine supplier for the 476 MW Baltic Eagle project, set to be developed off the island of Rügen in German waters of the Baltic Sea. When confirmed, MHI Vestas will supply 52 of its V174-9.5 MW offshore wind turbine, and with delivery and installation set for 2022 and 2023 respectively, Baltic Eagle will be the first offshore wind farm to feature MHI Vestas’ 9.5 MW turbines.
“We are extremely proud to launch our V174-9.5 MW turbine with the Baltic Eagle project,” said MHI Vestas CEO, Philippe Kavafyan. “This will be a tremendous opportunity for MHI Vestas to deepen our experience in German waters and notably in the Baltic Sea. We look forward to confirming the order with Iberdrola and readying for installation.”
Iberdrola’s decision to name a preferred supplier builds on the company’s commitment to the project’s development, which includes the launch of the main geotechnical campaign started in the summer of 2018, and all necessary design and contracting activities for main components are similarly progressing according to the project’s program.
“Baltic Eagle confirms the company’s firm commitment to use technological innovation to deliver utility-scale renewable projects which combat climate change and foster economic and social development in the territories where we operate,” stressed Xabier Viteri, Director of Iberdrola Renewables.
Iberdrola is also aiming to deliver significant cost reductions through the development and construction of Baltic Eagle, which was awarded in the second offshore tender organized by Germany’s Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency). Iberdrola’s use of advanced technology, including the use of the larger and more efficient MHI Vestas’ V174-9.5 MW offshore wind turbine, will reduce the overall cost and pave the way for similar cost-cutting measures by other developers.
This is the second time the two companies have worked together after Iberdrola named MHI Vestas as turbine supplier for the 350 MW Wikinger wind farm in the German area of the Baltic Sea. Combined with the Wikinger offshore wind farm, Iberdrola and MHI Vestas’ development in the German waters of the Baltic Sea will amount to approximately 836 MW and a joint investment of €2.5 billion.
