Intro

This week, we have a very special report for a variety of reasons. Ever since we started our Pravduh initiative, people have suggested other news sources. So, we decided to add multiple new news sources in 2019, also going all the way back to September 1st (collecting and rating all articles from these sources) in order to maintain the ability for month-to-month and year-to-year comparisons. The news sources being added are: CBS, NBC, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, New York Post, and Huffington Post.

If you are interested in how the new data affects all the prior weeks, here are two charts comparing the before and after:

There seem to be some strange links between some of these publications. The Washington Post uses Bloomberg stories and seems to be particularly in love with Bloomberg’s Liam Denning. The Huffington Post used a story by Engadget’s Rachel England. The Los Angeles Times also uses stories from Bloomberg as well as from the Washington Post and has actual collaborations with Bloomberg. When I say using stories, I don’t mean using them as sources, I mean literally using their stories and authors. A lot of news sources use Reuters and the Associated Press, but seeing these kinds of collaborations is a bit unusual.

The order of the reports is as follows: Total, Q4, December, Weekly. It might be lengthy, but we like to be thorough.

The amount of data we have collected by now is immense. We are tracking and analyzing a dataset containing 2,553 articles written by 658 authors. Our system was designed on the fly, so we have had to expand and improve the system continuously. At the moment, we have a bug in the tools for author scoring for individual months and quarters. This is an issue that we have dealt with before in the tool for overall author scores, so it will be easy to fix within a few days, but not in time for this report. The missing tables will be added in next week’s report.

Remember that each week we are sharing the raw data (headlines and scores). You can scan through yourself if you want to double check our findings or just see the headlines. And you can check out our own Tesla stories for more context and comparison. For details on our methodology and broader context about this weekly analysis, see this Pravduh About Tesla report.

#Pravduh About #Tesla
2018 Report

These are the authors who published more than 11 articles about Tesla since we started tracking on September 1st, ranked from least positive to most positive:

For this entire section, note: At major media outlets, there are often headline writers who control this part of article. Nonetheless, we find tracking the authors is also interesting and potentially useful for considering what kind of stories the authors tend to write.

Q4 2018 Report

These are the authors who published more than 6 articles about Tesla in Q4, ranked from least positive to most positive:

For this entire section, note: At major media outlets, there are often headline writers who control this part of articles. Nonetheless, we find tracking the authors is also interesting and potentially useful for considering what kind of stories the authors tend to write.

December 2018 Report

These are the authors who published more than 4 articles about Tesla in December, ranked from least positive to most positive:

#Pravduh About #Tesla
Report #18 (December 29– January 4)

Some Sneaky Headlines Last Week

  • Tesla’s core business of selling Model S and Model X vehicles is holding up, but no one is paying attention (Business Insider)
  • Tesla Reports Record Output, but Cuts Prices, and Its Shares Plunge (NYT)
  • Tesla triples deliveries of electric cars but share price tumbles (The Guardian)
  • Tesla’s $7,500 Tax Credit Goes Poof, But Buyers May Benefit (Wired)

The more these #Pravduh About #Tesla reports get shared online through social media, the more people will take notice. If there is an ongoing heavily negative slant about Tesla in certain outlets — even as Tesla has so much positive news to share — people should be aware of this and approach each new story with that in mind.

Again, here is the data from this past week in case you want to have a closer look at the raw data.
