Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S announced this week that it had received an order to supply 220 megawatts (MW) worth of wind turbines to a wind project in the United States, which in and of itself is not the biggest news, but the order subsequently took the company passed the 10 gigawatt (GW) mark for 2018.

Announced on Thursday, Vestas revealed that it had received an order to supply 100 of its V120-2.2 MW turbines for an unnamed project in the United States by an undisclosed customer. Vestas will not only supply the wind turbines for the project but will also commission the turbines. Delivery is expected to take place in the third quarter of 2019, and commissioning for the following quarter.

“The expansion of the V120-2.2 MW turbine in the USA is a direct result of Vestas’ dedication to advance wind turbine technology at a rapid pace, incorporating learnings from our unparalleled wind turbine database and installed fleet to build on proven technology,” said Chris Brown, President of Vestas’ sales and service division in the United States and Canada. “Each new generation of technology unlocks even more value and performance for our customers and continues to deliver the lowest cost of energy to consumers and communities throughout North America.”

However, while this may be a relatively unspectacular piece of news — made more so by the lack of project and customer disclosure — it was nevertheless a big announcement for Vestas, as it marked the point when its order intake for 2018 surpassed the 10 GW mark — and before December, no less.

Vestas has regularly increased its yearly order intake over recent years, from 8,943 MW in 2015, 10,494 MW in 2016, and 11,176 MW in 2017. Whether Vestas is able to utilize an entire month to exceed previous years’ order records is yet to be seen, but 10 GW in 11 months is nevertheless an impressive accomplishment and one that continues to highlight the growing importance of the global wind energy industry.
