Intro

The number of articles about Tesla this past week and even this past month is quite low. Nonetheless, we do see something unusual in the raw data that you don’t see on any of the charts.

One of the reasons why there is more negative news this week is because of a comment Elon Musk made in an interview. He mentioned that Tesla was near death during the Model 3 ramp up. However, besides that, we are also seeing a rise in fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) about Tesla again. One thing we have consistently seen since week 1 is negative FUD editorials about Tesla. No matter what, they are always there, and never fit into a recurring headlines category. This week there seems to be more of them, though. Why that is, who knows? But it is becoming more apparent that something is up. When we are going through the weekly headlines and look for recurring topics, these headlines just stand out and make you ask, where is this coming from?

FUD headlines out of nowhere:

  • Elon Musk should just admit it when his companies are in trouble — it would make supporters love him even more (CNBC)
  • Menial Tasks, Slurs and Swastikas: Many Black Workers at Tesla Say They Faced Racism (New York Times)
  • Where Was Donald Trump When Tesla Laid Off 9% of Its Workforce? (The Street)
  • Whatever Doesn’t Kill Tesla Makes It Stranger (Bloomberg)
  • Stick to cars and rockets, Elon (Fox News)
  • Tesla is in trouble (Yahoo)

(Side note: most creative headline of the year totally goes to “Tesla is in trouble.” Someone should definitely get a raise for that one)

Coming later this week is an analysis of the different publishers, their top authors, and how their coverage changed over the weeks.

Also, we wanted to emphasize that each week we are sharing the raw data (headlines and scores). You can scan through the data yourself if you want to double check our findings or just see the headlines. And you can check out our own Tesla stories for more context and comparison.

#Pravduh About #Tesla
November 2018 Report

This month, we are not publishing a monthly author list because there were only 4 authors who wrote 5 articles ore more, and for at least some accuracy, we don’t calculate the neutrality index if the author hasn’t published at least 5 articles. As mentioned before, we will however be publishing a piece analyzing the different publishers and authors and how their coverage of Tesla has changed over the past 13 weeks.

Here is data from this past month in case you want to have a closer look at the raw data.

Report #13 (November 24–30)

The next matter on our itinerary is tracking the authors who covered this news. While the whole list is too long to put here since there are many authors who have written just one piece about Tesla, here are the 30 who published more than 8 articles about Tesla since we started tracking on September 1st, ranked from least positive to most positive:

The neutrality index goes from -100% to 100%. In this system, 0% is neutral. The number of negative/positive articles and percentages are also still displayed.

(For this entire section, note: At major media outlets, there are often headline writers who control this part of articles, but we find tracking the authors is also interesting and potentially useful for considering what kind of stories the authors tend to write.)

Again, here is the data from this past week in case you want to have a closer look at the raw data.

What Changed With Tesla Last Week?

You can consider for yourself what were objectively the important updates in the “Tesla story” last week.
