Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas announced this week that it has been selected to supply wind turbines to a wind farm set to be built in Victoria, Australia, the 336 megawatt (MW) Dundonnell Wind Farm, which was the largest successful project out of the state’s 928 MW Renewable Energy Auction Scheme.

As has been repeatedly pointed out, Australia’s renewable energy industry is progressing much the same as the United States’, relying on state governments and sub-national entities to drive growth and development in place of absent strong national policies. While not the country’s renewable energy leader — a role currently owned by South Australia — Victoria is making strong headway of late, and its recent 928 MW Renewable Energy Auction Scheme awarded six projects located across the state — including three solar projects and three onshore wind projects.

Vestas, one of the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturers, announced on Wednesday, that it had been awarded the contract to supply the largest of these projects, the 336 MW Dundonnell Wind Farm, set to be located in the Western District of Victoria. The project, which is being developed by Tilt Renewables, will feature 80 of Vestas’ V150-4.2 MW wind turbines, the largest in the company’s portfolio, boasting a 114-meter hub height tower designed to maximize performance under the site’s specific wind conditions.

“Two Vestas-backed projects have been awarded under Victoria’s Renewable Energy Auction Scheme, which underlines Vestas’ ability to offer customers customised solutions that ensure the lowest cost of energy, highest quality of technology, and optimal park performance,” said Clive Turton, Vestas Asia-Pacific President.

“Vestas is a long-term trusted partner of Tilt Renewables, with a proven track record in the market and the capabilities to support this project’s successful auction outcome,” said Tilt Renewables CEO Deion Campbell. “Together, we are proving that wind energy is a critical part of the solution to meet Victoria’s energy needs.”

The Dundonnell Wind Farm will also benefit from the Vestas Renewable Energy Hub in nearby Geelong, which consists of a service support center, an Australian main component warehouse, a wind turbine hub manufacturing facility in partnership with a local contract manufacturer for a portion of the wind turbines to be supplied to the project, and a formal partnership with Deakin University to research the next generation of carbon fiber for specific use in wind turbine blades.

“Together with our partners, Vestas is fully committed to the Victorian Renewable Energy Target, and we support the state government’s approach to secure competitively-priced renewable energy while maximising the positive impact on the community,” said Clive Turton.
