100% of Americans have strong opinions on a whole range of things. They write impassioned letters to the editor, they call in to talk radio shows, they berate their family, friends, and colleagues with endless diatribes about what is wrong with America. Then when Election Day comes, they stay away from the polls as if they’re afraid they might catch cooties if they touch an actual voting machine.

voteHuman beings don’t always act rationally. “Do as I say, not as I do,” is the norm. We expect others to vote but we are too busy, too tired, too angry, or too disgusted with the political process to care. “A pox on all their houses!” we cry in despair. “I’ll show them who’s boss by not voting for any of them!”

If that’s your attitude, you are playing right into their hands. As sick and as cynical as it might be, there are powerful forces who drop gigatons of money during every political campaign to convince you to stay home on Election Day. If you fall for their lies and smears,  you’ve been had and the joke’s on you.

Democracy is just a lie we tell ourselves to make us feel good if we stay away from the polls. Don’t let the bastards steal your vote by convincing you to opt out of the voting process. If you don’t vote, they win and you lose. It’s that simple.

Every election is important, but this year’s vote is especially so. If you are an American, it may be your last chance to bring sanity back to the fight against destroying the Earth with the pollution humanity leaves behind as it forges its way forward into a brave new world. We have to stop using our home as a sewer. The things we do and permit others to do to our planet are slowly but surely killing each and every one of us. They are condemning our kids to a world that is less safe, less healthy, less sustainable than it has ever been.

You won’t see respect for the environment being talked about much during the closing days of the campaign. You will see a bazillion negative ads accusing political opponents of lying, cheating, stealing, and mopery on the high seas. Ignore all that huffing and puffing. Vote for people you think will do the best job of protecting the environment by promoting renewable energy, the electrification of the transportation sector, and a transition away from fossil fuels.

Nothing else matters. All those hot button issues that keep you tossing and turning all night won’t amount to a piss hole in the snow if we destroy the only home we have. So next Tuesday, vote as if your life depends upon it, because it does.
