SunPower has completed a 1.7 megawatt solar installation at the global headquarters of Bose Corporation in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The system is comprised of almost 4,000 SunPower solar panels that will generate 2.4 million kWh every year, supplying a ‘substantial portion’ of the power needed by the Bose campus over the full term of the 20-year power purchase agreement. The installation of a system this size in Massachusetts demonstrates yet again that solar panels are not only viable options for local power generation in sunny states, but that they are more than capable of providing clean electricity in very seasonal locations, such as Massachusetts.

“Corporate renewable energy programs are growing, especially in Massachusetts where Bose is headquartered,” said Nam Nguyen, SunPower executive vice president, commercial solar. “We’re proud to be working with Bose to further advance solar development in the Commonwealth, and to support the company’s commitment to long-term sustainability as a leading global brand.”

SunPower provided turnkey service for the installation, including financing, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) as well as the long tail of operate and maintain (O&M) support for the system. The ground mount system utilizes a fixed-tilt installation along the sloping hillside along the southern border of Bose’s campus.

SunPower was the leading commercial solar provider in America in 2017, installing more commercial solar capacity than any other company, at 231.2MW, according to analysis by GTM Research. SunPower is also the only module manufacturer in the top 5 commercial installers. Tesla trailed SunPower significantly in second place, with 150MW of installed capacity when the report was compiled in 2017.

The top 3 commercial developers in the analysis, SunPower, Tesla and NRG, all installed more than 100 MW of installed capacity each and between the three companies, deployed nearly a quarter of commercial solar installations in 2017.

Commercial solar installations, such as the installation at the Bose headquarters, highlight the increasing realization of the potential for passive solar installations to offset growing energy costs for office facilities. Beyond just being good for sustainability and for a brand’s image, the installations are increasingly sound financial options, even in less than ideal locations.
