Siemens Gamesa To Provide Turbines For One Of Norway’s Largest Wind Farms
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy announced last week that it had secured the contract to supply the 208 megawatts (MW) Tonstad Wind Farm in Norway with 51 of its SWT-DD-142 onshore wind turbines, bringing its in-country installed capacity up to 630 MW.
The Spanish wind energy giant and world’s leading wind turbine manufacturer will, in addition to supplying the 4 MW wind turbines, also provide long-term, 25-year service to the wind farm which, upon completion, will be one of the largest wind farms in Norway. Developed by French multinational electric company ENGIE, the Tonstad Wind Farm will be built in the municipalities of Sirdal and Flekkefjord in the South of Norway and will provide electricity to Hydro Energi, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro. In total, the project will generate over 0.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) each year and save nearly 526,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually — allowing Hydro to produce approximately 50,000 tonnes of aluminum per year at its Norwegian plants.

The move is unsurprising considering that Norsk Hydro is one of the world’s leading corporate procurers of renewable energy. According to figures recently published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), Norsk Hydro was the world’s third-leading corporate procurer of renewable energy with 667 MW, behind Facebook with 1.1 gigawatts (GW) and US telecommunications giant AT&T with 820 MW (and ahead of US aluminum manufacturer Alcoa with 524 MW). According to a Norsk Hydro spokesperson, Tonstad Wind Farm is included in these BNEF figures.
