Say what you will of the long winter nights and low temperatures of Northern Europe, but Scandinavia knows how to band together intelligently and get work done. These northern European countries continue to be at the forefront of electric vehicle (EV) adoption — electric cars, buses, boats, and trucks — and they have also started to tackle the final frontier, that of the demanding electric aviation industry.

Scandinavia Ushers In The New Electric Aviation Era

Scandinavia is well known for its green endeavors of various kinds, and Norway has been specifically very active in promoting electric mobility solutions. The country has just conducted its first successful electric flight under a coordinated initiative to electrify its domestic aviation by 2040.

Supported by the government, the project is handled by the state-owned airport operator Avinor and its partners, Wideroe and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), as well as the Norwegian Association of Air Sports and climate foundation ZERO. “The Norwegian government has tasked Avinor with developing a program that paves the way for the introduction of electric aircraft in commercial aviation,” noted Ketil says Solvik-Olsen, Norway’s Minister of Transport and Communications.

If you recall, a few months back, we wrote about Avinor and how the airport group was focused on establishing the foundational work for the future transition into electric aviation.

“At Avinor, we want to demonstrate that electric aircraft are already available on the market, as well as help make Norway a pioneer of electric aviation in the same way as the country has become a pioneer of electric cars,” said Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen. Avinor is responsible for the 44 state-owned airports and air navigation services for civilian and military aviation in Norway.

Here’s more from Avinor:

“Along with energy saving measures, the ongoing modernization of aircraft fleets and the introduction of sustainable biofuel, electric aircraft can help to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions from Norwegian aviation in the coming decades. As electric engines cost must less to operate than current engines, this will result in lower prices for flight tickets.”

“The Norwegian short-leg domestic network is ideal for trialling the first commercial electric-powered flights, which are expected to have a limited range and capacity,” Falk-Petersen added.

“There is also substantial political willingness in Norway to establish a framework that promotes electrification in other transport sectors, such as road traffic and ferries. In addition, Norway’s capacity for renewable energy makes electrification particularly attractive from a climate perspective.”

Fly First To The Electric Skies In Norway?

It sounds as if the first commercial electric flights will happen around Los Angeles and Scandinavia, as well as China. We’re happy to hear more from Avinor, the Pipistrel e-plane, and their partners as they usher in the new era of electric air mobility.
