Korean solar PV manufacturer Hanwha Q CELLS announced this week that it shipped a total of 770 megawatts (MW) worth of solar modules to Japan in 2017, making it the country’s largest module supplier for five years.

While Jinko Solar holds the outright position as the world’s leading solar PV module supplier, Hanwha Q CELLS can nevertheless boast complete supremacy in the Japanese market — and for the fifth year running, no less. Analytics firm Global Data published their solar PV module shipments ranking for 2017 and, unsurprisingly, Jinko Solar maintained its lead ahead of Trina Solar and JA Solar — although its lead over Trina is probably not as healthy as it might prefer. Hanwha Q CELLS came in at fifth, boasting a market share of 5.49% compared to Jinko’s 9.70%.

However, in a press release published this week, Hanwha Q CELLS announced it had shipped a total of 770 MW worth of solar modules in Japan in 2017, making it the leading overseas solar modules supplier for the fifth year in a row — 2013 to 2017, surpassing even domestic suppliers.

The information comes via an independent report, Reality and Future Perspective of Solar Battery Related Technology and Market 2018, published by Japanese market research company Fuji Keizai, which confirmed that Hanwha Q CELLS beat out any other company, including Chinese and local-Japanese companies.

“Securing leading market share in a competitive, high quality solar market such as Japan is testament to the extensive effort put in by the Hanwha Q CELLS R&D team to ensure that our module products are continually the best-in-class,” said Dong-in Shin, the Head of Sales for Hanwha Q CELLS Japan. “As a non-domestic company, thriving in the Japanese solar market is incredibly challenging, which is why Hanwha Q CELLS Japan has taken great care to understand the needs of end customers in Japan, examining closely which solutions, products and services would best fit their needs, and why we have duly delivered. Our aim now is to continue to strengthen this market-leading position in Japan and further build strong relationships throughout the country.”
