We have some positive and concrete news from Germany’s electric car industry — Porsche’s installation of four 800V superfast chargers in Berlin, which hint that it is ready to catch up to leading EV producers. This is still a test run, though, and we hope to see more concrete news to follow.

Porsche 800V Charging System Means A Brisk 250 Mile Recharge

It’s easy to get lost in the stream of future green energy news from German carmakers. With an accent on tomorrow, what is happening today pales in comparison to what should happen tomorrow. This new Porsche press release shows something concrete today, not just projections about technology years from now. Four Porsche 800V charging systems have been installed at certain dealerships equipped with the Porsche high-voltage charging infrastructure.

The Porsche charging system uses the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector and can split its 800V throughput into two 400V plugs. This is part of what Porsche calls its “Porsche Turbo Charging” concept. Essentially, this gives future Porsche owners 400 kilometers, or about 250 miles, of range in 40–80 minutes. Once the voltage level increases to 800V, the charging time will come down to less than 20 minutes for the same range.

Concretely, Porsche estimates its Panamera Hybrid owners should see a combined fuel consumption of 3.0 – 2.5 l/100 km with CO2 emissions in the 69 to 56 g/km range, and combined electricity usage of 17.6 to 15.9 kWh/100 km. For the bulkier Cayenne E-Hybrid, the respective numbers are 3.4 – 3.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions 78 – 72 g/km, and electricity consumption of 20.9 – 20.6 kWh/100 km. Neither can use superfast charging from stations like the ones described above.

The first Porsche model to be able to use such stations will be the Porsche Taycan (formerly called Mission E), which is supposed to be on the market in 2019. “In this rapidly evolving world of mobility, we are consistently preparing ourselves for the launch of the first fully electric Porsche model, the Taycan”, says Karsten Sohns, Managing Director of Porsche Deutschland GmbH. “Having an appropriate charging infrastructure at our Porsche sites and beyond is an essential component of our strategy.”

We would have hoped all chargers would be ramping up to 800 volt charging globally, but at least we have this start.
