BYD has made progress in electrifying the east coast of the United States with a delivery of 5 electric buses to Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority.

The island community of Martha’s Vineyard is well known for being a popular summer vacation hideaway for wealthy east coasters, and now they will be able to get around the island on BYD’s quieter, cleaner electric buses. The new buses will give residents and visitors alike the opportunity to ride in a fully electric vehicle that generates zero emissions and far less noise than internal combustion bus, while saving the transit authority tens of thousands of dollars per bus, per year.

The 5 new buses will replace traditional diesel buses in the Vineyard Transit Authority fleet, with a 6th bus from BYD being delivered by the end of this month. The new BYD buses are a part of a larger strategy to electrify the island’s fleet in the coming years. The VTA followed up the delivery with an announcement that it would be purchasing another four BYD buses in support of the electrification initiative.

“We are excited to begin transforming our fleet with these six BYD electric buses,” said Angie Grant, Administrator of Vineyard Transit Authority. “VTA is the first transit agency in Massachusetts to commit to going all-electric. This delivery is a milestone for both VTA and our state to begin the shift of electrification.”

The Vineyard Transit Authority chose to purchase BYD buses based on a lengthy selection process that took into account the 12-year battery warranty, range and the wide range of vehicles BYD offered that allowed the VTA to select just the right bus to meet the needs of its customers.

“We are thrilled to partner with VTA in helping to create a more sustainable world. Many agencies look to VTA for its industry-leading practices and consciousness. They service an area that is in high demand year after year and they set the bar for forward thinking,” stated Bobby Hill, senior vice president of BYD.

The new BYD buses for the VTA were manufactured at BYD’s recently expanded Lancaster, California, factory.
