The EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, lands in less than one month — July 24.

Airplanes are great and I certainly enjoy the sleek beauty of an early Learjet or the majestic beauty of gliding in the air with no other sound than the air surrounding the engineless aircraft. Ah, the sweet sensations of alternative energy vehicles, especially electric aircraft, so much quieter than propellers and jets.

With an intent to both solve common mobility problems and offer a coherent vision of the future, Uber and other traditional airspace players are now rolling out the carpet to electric air travel.

What is truly amazing is that this is probably the final frontier of the electric vehicle. EVs have far-reaching influence, but they are just beginning to touch aircraft due to greater energy density needs in aircraft. This event is of particular interest since it not only shapes the future of electric air travel but also highlights what is happening right now in this industry.

While the modern era all started from wanting to make vehicles more efficient, the first cars were electric and locomotives and trains have also been electric, as well as certain boats, cars, skateboards, bicycles, motorcycles, and now all the way up to the skies.

The July 24th AirVenture Lindbergh Innovation Forum is about the future of autonomous commercial aircraft. It should cover urban air challenges and opportunities, futuristic aircraft designs, electric flight and what will power it, such as the use of advanced batteries.

What are the unique needs of electric aircraft compared to electric cars and buses? How will the shape and size of electric aircraft evolve? When will flying electric robotaxis arrive?

The AirVenture Lindbergh Innovation Forum isn’t the only event in town. We all know about Uber’s Elevate, and there is the ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and more centers where innovations and breakthroughs happen as fast as they did for electric cars a decade ago.

One panel at the coming event will include Steve Smith, corporate speaker and former astronaut; John Petersen, chairman of the Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation; and the Lindberghs’ grandson, Erik Lindbergh, president of VerdeGo Aero.

The EAA AirVenture’s Aviation Gateway Park Forums will be held at the Wittman Regional Airport Field. You can get the app here.
