Leeuwarden, 2018 European Cultural Capital from the Netherlands, will be heaven for electric vehicles for two weeks. From July 1st through 14th, an electric driving world record should be broken by Frisian and international e-drivers.

More and more, the Netherlands shows up as the #1 home for sustainability activists in Europe. Profound and clever, they establish a kind of magical e-mobility wonderland. Not only dreaming, but doing! They find ways to break old thinking, and on July 14th, they want to be heaven for the largest fossil-free car parade ever.

They need more than 746 vehicles to participate. I think they can do it. The Oranjes won land from water. Small in land but unique at sea, they were one of the most famous seafarer nations in the world. They won soccer championships despite their small size. And they will — I dare to bet on it — mark a new world record in the “Cultural Capital of Europe.”

The world record for the largest fossil-free parade on earth would be another fun step for the Dutch e-mobility success story, which already includes some global EV charging leadership and one of the highest market shares for electric cars in the world.

For the parade effort, all fossil-free transport modes are welcome, on the water or on the road — electrical boats, electric cars, electric motorcycles, Segways, Trefectas, electric and normal bikes. “Vehicles powered by hydrogen, solar power or biogas are also welcome, as are sailing boats and canoes, regular bicycles and your grandfather’s choir on the back of horses! The more futuristic or quirky, the better!”

But that follows other fossil-free mobility events and fascinating adventures within the beautiful Frisian region of the Netherlands, and there was more this past week as well. Solar boats recently maneuvered through the waters of Akkrum. More than 20 teams competed for a coveted title. There was a 55km endurance race as well as a Sprint.

The “Young Solar Challenge,” meanwhile, featured students aged 14 to 17 years. They built their own solar boats from a self-building package in the V5 class and got to know different techniques for solar car racing. Again, more than 20 teams competed against each other.

There were also lectures on sustainability, lifestyle coaches, sustainable living and driving lessons, etc. The event attracts around 8,000 visitors annually.

Have any such events in your region? Perhaps it’s time to help organize some!
