The World Green Building Council announced a partnership with the China Green Building Council on Monday that could have significant repercussions, considering that China is the largest building construction market in the world with up to 20 billion square meters constructed annually.

The World Green Building Council (World GBC) and China Green Building Council (China GBC) announced that they plan to collaborate on efforts to increase green buildings around the world and to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Given the size of China’s building construction market — which is expected to account for nearly half of all new construction globally in the coming decade — the impact of joining the World GBC could yield immediate and important results.

“The significance of bringing China into the global green building movement cannot be underestimated,” explained Terri Wills, CEO of the World Green Building Council. “Just as China has sought to assert its commitment to combating climate change on the global stage, this partnership marks a new era in cooperation between the world’s largest green construction market and our community of Green Building Councils in over 70 countries. We look forward to learning from their expertise and experience as we seek to create green buildings for everyone, everywhere.”

Already, China’s own green building efforts have yielded 523 million square meters of buildings certified green by China GBC’s Three Star green building rating system, making it one of the world’s leading green building sectors. By signing with the World GBC, China’s efforts will receive outside support and aid, and could further help to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions — emissions which account for around 30% of all global emissions, the largest in the world. China GBC will cooperate with national Green Building Councils around the world to leverage global practices and join in the World GBC’s movement in promoting the global uptake of green buildings.

Specifically, the new partnership will see China GBC commit to introducing a nearly net zero standard for its Three Star rating system in 2018. China GBC will also work with World GBC as part of its Better Places for People project which seeks to increase the number of buildings which are both good for the environment and good for the people who occupy them.

“With the partnership between WorldGBC and ChinaGBC, we are confident that China will be able to make even bigger progress in our commitments to climate action at the global stage,” said Dr Qiu Baoxing, former Vice Minister, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

“We are strongly committed to healthy and low-carbon developments in China and in this respect, we are delighted to become a partner to the World Green Building Council,” added Professor Wang Youwei, Chairman, China GBC. “This partnership will enable China to learn from global best practices, share the progress we have made in China, and to accelerate our commitments made in the Paris Agreement.”
