The prominent energy firm E.ON will be forming a new strategic partnership with Nissan, which will be focused on electric vehicle charging solutions, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services, and distributed renewable energy generation + energy storage systems, as jointly revealed at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.

Work related to the strategic partnership has already begun in Denmark — where customers are now being offered home electric vehicle (EV) charging stations paired with flat electricity rates for charging.

Such offerings will now, as the result of the strategic agreement, be rolled out in other markets (outside of Denmark) as well.

The press release provides more: “In addition, the partnership will leverage Nissan’s vehicle-to-grid infrastructure and advanced bi-directional charging technology to allow customers to optimize their energy use and costs. E.ON’s extensive experience in solar and storage solutions for home owners will allow the partners to offer renewable energy solutions to Nissan customers and optimize their electricity costs.”

The chairman of Nissan Europe, Paul Willcox, commented on the new partnership: “We’re on a mission to break down every barrier to EV ownership. This exciting partnership with E.ON is another step on that journey. Our goal is for Nissan to be recognized as the go-to automotive partner for energy services, with the ultimate ambition to provide free electricity for our EV customers.”

Interesting comments. Presuming that Willcox means what he says, it’s interesting to note the way that the news coincides (roughly) with the release of a much improved Nissan LEAF. And later this year Nissan will also launch a very long-range version of the LEAF as well, which should make the offering a viable option for almost anyone living in Europe, with “range anxiety” ceasing to be a real issue.
