Ahead of the planned official unveiling of the model on February 27th, Hyundai has now released the first teaser images of the all-electric compact SUV that’s been dubbed “Kona.”

The new all-electric Hyundai Kona SUV will reportedly feature a “class-leading” range, which is something of an ambiguous statement as there’s not really anything out there now in the all-electric compact SUV segment (except in China). Perhaps “class-leading” is a reference to the broader compact SUV market (gas/petrol models included)?

Notably, Hyundai seems to be claiming that the model will be widely available “to everyone” in Europe following its launch this summer. Given the company’s problems scaling Ioniq Electric production to date, though, a bit of skepticism on that count is perhaps warranted.

A press release on the matter provides details: “The All-New Kona Electric will feature two different powertrain versions offering customers one of the most powerful electric engines on the market with a class leading range of almost 470 kilometers (internal target under WLTP regulations) and a great fun-to-drive character. Furthermore, drivers will benefit from a wide range of convenience and connectivity features as well as active safety and driving assistance technologies.”

That all sounds pretty good, but as noted above the company seems to be — as is the case of most every other auto manufacturer out there now — having problems sourcing enough battery capacity to meet the demand for its electric models. Perhaps that’s slated to change for Hyundai before too long though.

The full unveiling of the new all-electric Hyundai Kona SUV will take place on February 27th, at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
