Nvidia & Continental Partnering On Self-Driving Vehicle Development
The prominent graphics chip manufacturer Nvidia Corp will be partnering with the Germany-based auto parts supplier Continental on the development of self-driving vehicle systems which will utilize Nvidia’s AI platform, as the two companies jointly revealed earlier this week.
This news follows on a number of other high-profile announcements concerning Nvidia’s growing influence in the self-driving vehicle tech sector. Based on the announcements issued to date, it is clear that Nvidia considers the sector to be an important one for future growth.
The recent joint announcement revealed that the two-company self-driving vehicle system solution will utilize a variety of Continental sensors, in combination with Nvidia’s aforementioned contributions. The new system is reportedly to be introduced to the market in 2021.
Reuters provides more:
“The companies did not disclose financial terms for the partnership. At CES in Las Vegas last month, Nvidia announced partnerships with Uber Technologies and Volkswagen AG. The company also works with electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc and China’s Baidu.
“Continental — which also works on self-driving with Baidu — is part of a separate consortium of automakers and suppliers working together to develop full autonomous driving systems.”
That consortium includes involvement from BMW, Intel/Mobileye, and Fiat Chrysler as well, so it represents a fairly formidable group with regard to resources and market share. It remains to be seen, though, if anything solid comes out of the grouping.
