The commercially important 2018 CES show in Las Vegas provided us with a number of announcements worth discussing. Something that we didn’t discuss at the time, though, was the reveal by EVBox of its new Level 2 electric vehicle charging station.

As noted in an email sent to CleanTechnica, this new Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging product has been designed specifically for the North American market — with the aim being to “disrupt” the “workplace & commercial charging market in the US.”

The product follows from an “extensive” research outing in California, where different stakeholders were used to help set the design parameters and goals of the offering, with the local market in mind.

The email sent to CleanTechnica provides an interesting overview of some of the findings of this research trip (with regard to US/Europe differences):

• Design needs to be robust and durable, allowing it to blend into its environment. However, size is not as big of a concern as it is in Europe. In fact, larger stations are appreciated because visibility is key in the US (for commercial purposes).

• Electric vehicle charging is seen as a business opportunity in the US. Most of the charging stations are placed by private companies (for example, at public parking garages or shopping malls).

• Cost is the main reason in the US to drive electric, along with being an early (tech) adopter and having a better driving experience. This is contrary to Europe where the environment (together with cost) is the primary reason.

A couple of other things to keep in mind here about the new offering: each station can charge up to 4 vehicles at a time (7.4 kW); NFC payment functionality; a customizable design; a modular and scalable design; and reportedly low maintenance requirements.

The new EVBox Level 2 charging station product will first be commercially available in North America as of early 2019, according to the email.

As a side note, EVBox is one of the sponsors of our 2018 State of Electric Vehicle Charging report. Check it out if you haven’t yet.
