Just a few weeks after placing his order, the satisfied first customer in Europe has promptly taken delivery of his brand new Nissan LEAF.

Nissan reports: “Leo Moran, 63, from Hartlepool, collected the keys to his special edition black Nissan LEAF 2.ZERO on Wednesday (January 31st) at Bristol Street Motors Darlington.” Moran is a retired police officer, who served with Cleveland Police for 30 years. He has experience driving high-performance response cars. The 100% electric car, with its zero tailpipe emissions, offers an effortless, quiet, agile, and most definitely responsive experience while driving. No wonder Mr. Moran converted to electric motoring a year ago when he purchased a 30kWh LEAF.

“As soon as the new edition of the British-built all-electric hatchback was announced, he began investigating and ordered the launch edition just before the end of last year.”

Responsive should be LEAF’s middle name — well, that’s the case with practically all electric cars. Moran knows this by now. Like me, Moran appreciates the LEAF from experience. He said: “I’ve driven many cars of all shapes and sizes and many performance cars, but I can say hand on heart the LEAF is the best car I’ve ever driven. I’ve spent the last year singing the praises of the Nissan LEAF, and now I have the new edition I cannot wait to get out and play, go on adventures and enjoy the drive.”

Mr. Moran said he was excited to discover all the new features on the Nissan LEAF, not least the innovative e-Pedal, which allows the driver to accelerate, slow down, and stop using just one pedal. “The great thing about the e-Pedal is it gives so much back to the driver. Technology is a wonderful thing, but it often leads to us as drivers forgetting fundamental skills. With the e-Pedal, you become more aware of your surroundings and drive in an entirely new way. And with the bigger battery and increased range, I can visit my friends in Scotland and Manchester on one charge. I’m really looking forward to seeing how far I can go. I’ve also made some investigations into getting the Nissan X-Storage and solar panels at my home, and I’m hoping I’ll be able to do that soon.”

He’s a good spokesman to be the first buyer of the new LEAF 2.ZERO!

Nissan stands on it accolades with a stable structure of proof. It has led global sales of electric cars, and many consumer surveys show very happy LEAF drivers — sometimes top of the market for the class. The new LEAF goes a few steps further than the previous one, which Nissan is happy to advertise. “The all-new Nissan LEAF is the world’s most advanced mass-market electric vehicle and an icon of the company’s Intelligent Mobility vision,” Nissan writes, “which is defined by how the car is driven, how it is powered and how it integrates into society.” Getting to specifics, how does the new LEAF fit that bill? “With its ProPILOT technologies, advanced all-electric powertrain and unique ability to connect to and power the buildings it plugs in to, the new LEAF is the on-road embodiment of this vision.”

Pricing details for the UK:

  • £21,990 (OTR) for the entry-grade Visia model, with the £4,500 UK government grant included (it’s included automatically, unlike the US tax credit for electric vehicles).
  • £29,155 for the top-of-the-range Tekna model, with the £4,500 UK government grant included.

Both of those trims include the 40 kWh battery, which is expected to allow for approximately 150 miles of real-world driving on a single charge.
