Electric GT (Tesla Racing Series) Now Officially Sanctioned By FIA

The Electric GT Racing Series — a racing series slated to make use of modified Tesla Model S sedans — is now officially sanctioned by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), the governing body of the Formula One and Formula E racing series.

The official sanctioning follows the crash-testing of the modified Tesla Model S sedans to be used in the new Tesla-based Electric Production Car Series by the FIA — testing which took place in Barcelona (Spain), and which the car obviously passed. (This is unsurprising, as the Tesla Model S is one of the safest production cars ever built.)

“We respect the FIA and we are honoured to have their support ahead of our inaugural season,” commented Electric GT Holdings CEO Mark Gemmell in a public statement on the matter.

“The Electric Production Car Series (EPCS) is the first all-electric, zero-emissions motorsport category from Electric GT Holdings Inc. Up to 20 drivers will race the fully race-prepared Tesla Model S P100D in the Electric Production Car Series, running on bespoke Pirelli tyres and equipped with the latest OMP safety equipment, Alcon brakes, R53 suspension and composite bodywork from BComp,” Electric GT shares.

“Electric GT Holdings Inc. has also published the EPCS sporting regulations, which include a three-heat (585kW) qualifying format. Rounds will include a day race (60km) and a dusk race (60km). EPCS race power will be set to a maximum of 585kW (778hp).”

“An innovative ‘Drift Off’ competition will also take place at suitable circuits, where fans will see the top two finishing drivers plus two fan-voted drivers go head-to-head to complete a series of drifting challenges to secure three further championship points.”

In related news, we recently reported about the unveiling of the new Formula E racing cars, which will be used in the 5th season the popular racing series — which will begin a fair while from now … as the 4th season is now ongoing.

Notably, Jaguar Land Rover will be putting in its own all-electric production car racing series as well — which will make use of modified Jaguar I-Pace vehicles, and will begin later in 2018. The Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY series would run concurrently with Formula E, which seems it would just pull more attention to this other series rather than “competing.”
