EVgo is America’s largest public EV fast-charging network, with more than 1,000 Level 3 fast chargers in 66 markets coast to coast. 2017 was a banner year for the company. Its customers used 13 million kilowatt-hours of electricity during 1.1 million charging sessions, each lasting an average of 25 minutes. That’s an increase of 50% over 2016. In total, that was enough electricity to power its customers’ cars for a total of 40 million miles, assuming 3.125 miles per kilowatt-hour. The 2017 total is nearly double the number of miles EVgo customers were able to travel in 2016.

“2017 was an extremely successful year for EVgo, and not only did we add the 1,000th charger to our network, but we also delivered more fast charging power to EV drivers than ever before, with a resulting impact of 1.6 million gallons of gasoline saved,” said Cathy Zoi, EVgo’s CEO. “We are extremely pleased to see such rapid growth not only of our network, but also of EV sales across the board, and we are proud to be at the center of this rapid change toward a more electrified world.”

The company increased the number of fast chargers in its network by 20% last year. According to a company press release, it expects these trends to continue as more long-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Bolt, 2018 Nissan LEAF, and Tesla Model 3 — come to market. The highest number of charging minutes ever in the company’s history occurred in December — more evidence that the demand for public fast chargers is increasing.

EVgo says all that electricity saved 1.6 million gallons of gasoline, assuming average fuel economy of 24.3 miles per gallon. If burned in internal combustion engines, that amount of gasoline would have released more than 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The company’s smartphone app makes is easy for customers to find the nearest available charger, begin a charging session, and pay for it all from the touchscreen of a smartphone.

EVgo offers several charging plans in addition to a pay-as-you-go option. Customers can enroll in a monthly fixed-rate charging plan. Several car companies, including BMW and Nissan, make unlimited charging programs available for their customers as well.
