Growing the profile of both brands, it has been announced the China-based auto manufacturer Chery Automobile Co will be utilizing tech provided by Nvidia Corp in its self-driving cars. These self-driving cars are being developed in cooperation with the China-based tech giant Baidu and ZF Friedrichshafen AG.

As the news originates with an announcement from Nvidia Corp and follows on a number of other similar announcements, it appears that Nvidia has been working hard in recent days to gain new partners and customers.

The battle lines do seem to be forming more clearly with regard to alliances in the autonomous and self-driving vehicle sectors. Of course, alliances can change, but linkages forming now could tell us a lot about the young and forming industry.

Reuters provides more information: “Chinese internet search firm Baidu and German auto supplier ZF had selected Nvidia Drive for their autonomous vehicle computing platform development in China, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said last week.”

“Nvidia already has partnerships in the autonomous vehicle industry with companies such as Tesla. Nvidia, traditionally a maker of graphics chips for PCs, has been expanding its reach to newer technologies such as self-driving cars.”

On that note, though, it should be realized that Tesla’s relationship with Nvidia is a loose one. It once had what seemed like a solid relationship with Mobileye, but that got sliced and Tesla ended up bringing its segment of self-driving tech in-house. Then there’s this from September 2017: “Tesla Infotainment Systems To Now Use Intel Rather Than Nvidia Tech.”

Tesla is clearly willing to bring all kinds of tech production in-house if it feels a need or an opportunity for cost reductions.
