Mobile Solar Generator Helps Puerto Rico, World’s Largest BiOPV Roof Installation, Community College Solar Farm (Cleantech in Action Series)
We’ve partnered with Technica Communications* for a monthly roundup of some of the coolest cleantech press releases in a series we are calling Cleantech in Action. Some of the highlights this month include a gym built entirely from bamboo, solar and storage for cooler schools in Hawaii, and solar flowers.
World’s Largest Building-Integrated Organic PV Installation in France
Who: Middle School Pierre Mendès France
What: 23.8 MWh BiOPV roof installation
Where: La Rochelle, France
Product and Vendor Utilized: Approximately 400 HeliaSol solar films by Heliatek
Cool Factors: Approximately 400 Heliatek HeliaSolar solar films installed are making this the world’s largest building integrated organic photovoltaic (BiOPV) installation on a roof. Taking into account the preparation time, six people needed only eight hours to install 500m² of HeliSol, as deployment took just over two minutes per film. With an installed power of 22.5 kWp, about 23.8 MWh will be generated annually, this represents approximately 15% of the school’s electricity demand. Read more here.
Mobile Solar Generator Assists Rebuilding Efforts in Puerto Rico
What: Mobile solar generator deployed for Hurricane Maria rebuilding efforts
Where: Puerto Rico
Product and Vendor Utilized: Sun Commander Series 8000 by Day & Night Solar, polyurethane system by Covestro and Creative Pultrusions
Cool Factors: In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the Day & Night Solar Sun Commander Series 8000 portable solar solution is providing immediate relief for Puerto Rico by powering the construction sites where permanent renewable energy sources are being built. The Sun Commander generator moves from construction site to construction site throughout Puerto Rico, pulled behind a standard ¾-ton pickup truck. The solar array consists of 36 x 260 watt all-glass panels, creating a total DC system size of 9.36 kilowatts. When not in off-grid use, the it can be connected to an existing electrical system, helping to reduce demand on it by pumping power back onto the grid. Read more here.
196 KW Solar System to Save Building $2.7 Million
Who: 580 Executive Center
What: 96 KW solar system
Where: Dublin, California
Product and Vendor: Cool Earth Solar SunPower Helix Carport
Cool Factors: A fully-integrated 196 KW SunPower Helix Carport solution by Cool Earth is set to save co-working space 580 Executive Center more than $2.7 million over the life of the system. It’s expected to pay for itself in under five years. Additionally, the project includes LEDs attached to the carport to provide superior lighting in the parking lot. Read more here.
Solar+Storage for Multiple Arizona Households
What: Over a dozen solar+storage systems
Where: Phoenix, Arizona
Product and Vendor Utilized: Phazr MicroStorage by JLM Energy
Cool Factors: More than a dozen residential JLM Energy Phazr MicroStorage plus solar projects have been installed in locations throughout the greater Phoenix metropolitan area in both Salt River Project (SRP) and Arizona Public Service (APS) territories. In SRP territory, customers can avoid peak demand charges by using energy storage when demand spikes. APS charges more for energy used during peak hours of the late afternoon and evening, when people are at home relying on the grid. JLM Energy’s software Measurz optimizes and controls when the solar energy should go into the batteries, directly into the home for immediate use, or back to the grid for net metering credit. The algorithms in the software are set to make the best deal for the customer based on their energy use profile and utility tariff structure. Read more here.
2 MW Solar Farm for Community College in New York
Who: Mohawk Valley Community College
What: 2 MW solar farm
Where: Rome, New York
Vendor Utilized: groSolar
Cool Factors: A 2 MW solar farm completed by groSolar for Mohawk Community College is expected to generate approximately 3.45 gigawatt-hours of clean renewable energy in its first full year of operations. That’s enough electricity to power nearly 300 homes. Additionally, the solar farm will offset more than 2,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide produced by more traditional energy generation sources.
