The first 2018 Nissan LEAFs for Europe are now rolling off the line at Nissan’s plant in Sunderland, UK. Customers will start receiving their 2018 Nissan LEAFs in February. The new Nissan LEAF offers longer journeys without recharging. The improved range of 235 miles (NEDC) on a single charge is more than double the range that the Leaf provided before (real-world range is more like 150 miles). The Nissan LEAF made the transition from a jaunt around the city, a commuting car, to leisurely or practical explorations and longer journeys. Drivers can drive long distances and use constantly extending CHAdeMO quick charging stations to enjoy a fairly convenient but more leisurely journey in a smooth and quiet electric car.

Improved technology in the new Nissan LEAF includes e-Pedal, an active one step forward in regenerative braking and one-pedal driving, as well as the normal benefits of electric cars that drivers quickly learn to love. “The e-Pedal allows drivers to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop the car by simply increasing or decreasing the pressure applied to the accelerator, providing more control and taking the stress out of driving. E-pedal can hold the stop even downhill, and is made accessible as standard from entry grade.”

E-pedal is impressive, but Nissan didn’t stop there with the new technological innovations in the loved electric car. The new LEAF includes Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist solution. The packaged autonomous driving technologies compete with Tesla’s Autopilot solution, but we are holding out on a thorough test drive before making comparisons.

ProPILOT’s advanced driving assistance “automatically controls the distance to the vehicle in front and steers the vehicle to help the driver keep LEAF centered in the lane.” The Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) “allows the driver to set the cruise control speed and adjusts dynamically to traffic conditions as they change around the vehicle. If the driver in front of the vehicle slows down quickly, ProPILOT will accordingly decrease the speed of the vehicle to maintain a preset buffer distance (or time), set by the driver.” The driving experience when driving on the highway in both heavy and flowing traffic becomes fluid and protective.

Other features include self-parking technology — which just requires the touch of a button. “ProPILOT Park is the technology that parks the new LEAF with the touch of a button. This full auto-parking feature combines advanced image processing technology using four high-resolution cameras and information from 12 ultrasonic sensors around the car to guide the vehicle into a space.”

“The Nissan LEAF has been in production in the UK since 2013 for European markets, with more than 85,000 units sold in Europe since 2011, when the first deliveries began from Nissan’s Oppama plant in Japan,” Nissan adds. “Following an initial investment of £420m, the introduction of the new Nissan LEAF has been supported by a further £36m investment in Nissan Sunderland Plant, supporting more than 2,000 jobs at Nissan and in the UK supply chain.”

The new Nissan LEAF has taken top honors at the 2018 CES (Consumer Electronics Show), as a 2018 Best of Innovation winner. It was a CES Best of Innovation award winner for Vehicle Intelligence and Self-Driving Technology, and CES honoree for Tech for a Better World.
