The impressive new Lynk & Co 01 SUV — the result of a collaboration between China-based Geely and its subsidiary Volvo — is now officially available for purchase in China, giving consumers there a sort of taste of the future owing to some of the interesting features included in the model.

In particular, the Lynk & Co 01 SUV’s dedicated, in-car share button stands out. What is that, you ask? It’s a physical button that’s used to generate a shareable temporary digital key, one that allows owners to lend out their vehicle (whether for personal use or for use as an on-demand taxi) without having to exchange a physical key with anyone.

It’s a pretty interesting idea. Though, it remains to be seen how well it works in the real world. Accompanying that feature, the 01 SUV also features a large central touchscreen and a very wide range of connectivity options/services, amongst other things.

“The 01 SUV is now available at around 150 dedicated brand stores and boutiques located across China. The 01 comes in four different options, which are meant to demystify the traditional trim and technology levels and options with a set menu of option at a clear price,” Tech Crunch reports.

“Lynk & Co’s first car went up for pre-sale on November 17, and resulted in 6,000 preorders in 137 seconds, according to the company — selling out its whole allotment for a sales event that was intended to span three days. That’s probably at least partially staged scarcity for the purposes of a marketing ploy, but now that it’s fully on sale at volume in the country we should get a better sense of how many people are looking for a car that’s sold more like a smartphone or a service in many ways than a vehicle.”

Also noteworthy here is the fact that the 01 SUV can be “subscribed to” rather than simply purchased. Something that will be interesting to see is how many customers opt to purchase the vehicle and how many go with the subscription option.
