India Plans EV Charging Corridor Across New Delhi
As India prepares itself for the electric vehicles blitzkrieg over the next few years, several arms of the Indian government are planning pilot projects to get the motor running.
The Indian government’s planning arm, NITI Aayog, recently released a draft proposal to set up an electric vehicles charging corridor across New Delhi which could serve as a foundation for much larger deployment of EV charging infrastructure across the country.
The proposal has been prepared in partnership with AC2SG, a Finland-based smart grid software solutions provider. The proposal calls for setting up 135 EV charging stations along the Gurgoan-South Delhi-Noida corridor. This route will likely cover the busiest routes of the Indian capital.
The proposal has identified 55 locations, which also includes locations owned by private companies to set up the charging stations. The plan includes implementation of 46 DC fast-charging and 89 AC slow-charging stations.
Several companies are looking to install EV charging stations in and around New Delhi on pilot bases. The reason for this focus on New Delhi is that it is likely to see a sudden jump in electric cars over the next few months.
Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra will deliver a total of 500 electric sedans to various ministries of the Indian government before the end of the year, which will require some charging infrastructure. The two companies will eventually deliver 10,000 electric cars over the next few months, all to Indian government authorities almost all of which are located in and around New Delhi.
Another reasons such pilot programs are coming up rapidly is that they provide companies to showcase their technological prowess in a new market like India. The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is expected to launch multiple tenders to set up EV charging stations. Such pilot programs will serve as technology demonstrators.
Fortum and NBCC India signed an agreement to set up EV charging stations across the country. ABB India, too, has expressed intention to set up 4,500 EV charging stations in India.
