Amsterdam’s Electric Vehicle Leadership (CleanTechnica Video)
One of the top presentations at EVBox’s first annual rEVolution conference earlier this year came from Bart Vertelman, Program Manager of Electric Mobility at the City of Amsterdam. Check out his presentation below in this exclusive CleanTechnica video (and view the slides in PDF form here).
If you visit Amsterdam today, you notice something very quickly — electric cars are everywhere, and that includes electric taxis. Bart actually highlights that 1 out of every 2 taxis is already a clean electric vehicle, and 100% of them are supposed to be within a couple of years.
Amsterdam city government treats public charging as home charging, since many people rely on on-street parking at their homes. I covered this a few years ago on a trip to Amsterdam, where I learned that the policy there is super simple and highly effective: if someone wants an EV charger on their street, they just have to ask the city and one will be installed within a couple of months.
And, no doubt about it, people are using these EV charging stations. Almost 30,000 unique users benefited from Amsterdam public charging stations in February. When I was there a few years ago, I typically saw several EVs around on-street EV charging stations. They seemed to accumulate in clusters there, with gaps on streets where I didn’t see chargers.
Clearly, Bart and his team are fans of smart charging. In his presentation, he highlighted a handful of smart charging benefits and special projects they’re involved in.
