Tel Aviv-based startup Arbe Robotics has just raised $9 million in funding to help develop its high-resolution radar system and bring it into full production. While there are a number of companies producing radar technology, Arbe Robotics claim that its system is the only one that offers a high resolution regardless of the weather conditions.

The company has created software that is able to not only help the vehicle ‘see’ objects, but also to identify what they are. It does this through the use of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping algorithms and an ultra high resolution radar system. This offers a greater capacity for the system to be able to perceive the objects around the vehicle. Give that one of the main problems with other radar systems is the inability to tell the difference between things like the sky and a light-colored vehicle, great accuracy is a real boon.

The funding will be used to push the project to the stage of in-car testing within the next two years, and then to take it into full commercial installation in autonomous vehicles. Funders in this round included O.G. Tech Ventures, OurCrowd, Canaan Partners, iAngels, and Taya Ventures. This $9 million round brings its total raised to date up to $12 million.

Radar systems are seen as being one of the key pieces of technology that will bring autonomous cars to the mainstream and allow them to take to every street safely. A number of companies are working hard in this area to be one of the first to market with the tech, and investors are putting more and more resources behind the drive. Last week, for example, Munich-based startup Blickfeld announced that it raised $4.25 million in funding to further develop its LiDAR tech. While LiDAR and the Arbe Robotics technology are different, it shows how the industry is pushing in this direction and everyone wants to be a part of the future of autonomous vehicles.
